Getting Shoulder Reconstruction Surgery

Shoulder reconstruction, as the name shows, is a procedure that is done to provide stability to the shoulder or to restore the functioning of the shoulder in case of any dislocation of the joint. The problem occurs when the muscles or ligaments surrounding the shoulder joint get damaged due to excessive stretching or any kind of injury. Often, it is seen in athletes involved or especially in footballers due to side ward tackle. Such an impact causes dislocation of the shoulder joint. Dislocation means, the humerus or the upper arm bone of the shoulder has come out of the glenoid, socket. There can be a partial or a complete shoulder dislocation and the treatment depends on that.

Shoulder surgery Gold Coast aims at repairing the damaged ligaments and cure the dislocation of the shoulder. The repairing of the damaged ligaments ensures the captivity of the joint in the socket. In the surgery, the torn cartilage, labrum, is attached back to the socket to keep the joint in place. An arthroscopy is also performed sometimes in advance for a better understanding of the situation inside the joint. This also helps in deciding whether a small invasive surgery is required using arthroscope and tiny instruments or a normal open surgery is required to repair the damaged cartilage.

Common causes

The most common causes of shoulder dislocation can be overhead shots in basketball or violent games like rugby. However, other physical activities that involve extensive stretching and movement of the arm can also lead to shoulder dislocation. These movements or injuries mostly lead to bankart injury. A bankart injury is the damage of the anterior glenoid labrum. When the labrum gets damaged, a pocket is formed at the front of genoid forms, due to which, the humeral head dislocates. In simple words, the damage of the cartilage labrum which makes the joint dislocate from the socket, is called bankart injury.

The dislocation of the joint causes immense pain, leading to swelling in the shoulder or maybe grinding sounds. In such cases, the shoulder reconstruction theory isn’t the first choice. First, the possibility of treatments like immobilisation, medication or physical therapy are checked. If the dislocation cannot be cured through any of these then shoulder reconstruction surgery is chosen as the last option.

Possible Risks Involved

Although a good surgeon would be aware of any precautions before or during the procedure and a well-experienced surgeon, that you can easily find in Gold Coast, will be taking care of all such things, but if you’re curious about the possible risks involved in the procedure, these include:

However, these complications are very rare and surgeons are well-aware of these risks so they take care of it.
